Shibbir Ahmed, Washington, D.C.: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is stepping down from the Trump administration. She is expected to leave her current position at the end of August and plans to join the pro-Trump political organization MAGA Inc. in September.
Trump announced Leavitt’s departure on social media on August 12. He said Leavitt was stepping away from the administration to spend more time with her family and young children. Trump praised her decision and described Leavitt as one of the most trusted members of his administration.
Leavitt has also said that serving as White House press secretary has been a great honor. However, as a mother of two, spending more time with her family and fulfilling her responsibilities at home played an important role in her decision. She welcomed her second child in May of this year and recently returned to the White House following maternity leave.
New Role at MAGA Inc.
Although Leavitt is leaving the White House, she is not stepping away completely from Trump’s political activities. She plans to return to MAGA Inc., Trump’s political action committee, in September. In that role, she is expected to remain involved in Trump’s political agenda and play a role in campaigning ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Trump has indicated that even after leaving the administration, Leavitt could remain one of his important outside advisers and continue to be an influential voice within the Republican Party. Leavitt previously worked with MAGA Inc. After serving as national press secretary for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, she became White House press secretary in 2025.
Youngest White House Press Secretary in History
At 28, Leavitt became the youngest White House press secretary in U.S. history. She was appointed to the position after Trump returned to the presidency for his second term in January 2025.
As one of the most visible figures in the Trump administration, Leavitt regularly appeared at White House briefings to defend and explain the president’s policies and decisions. Following her departure, discussions are underway within the Trump administration over who will succeed her as White House press secretary.
Multiple Departures From the Administration
Leavitt’s departure comes at a time when several other senior officials and political advisers have recently left the Trump administration. The departures have renewed discussions about changes within the White House staff structure and its political communications strategy ahead of the midterm elections.
In Leavitt’s case, however, family responsibilities and the desire to spend more time with her children have been cited as the primary reasons for her departure. At the same time, her planned return to MAGA Inc. means she is expected to remain involved in Trump’s broader political operation.
